The Zombie Apocalypse Farmer (ZAF) Corps is saving the world one garden at a time. Together, using the simple steps from the “Quick! Plant Something” Guides, we can all grow the food we need, whether our outdoor spaces are yards, patios, rooftops or decks.
Can it be done? Of course it can! During WWII Americans planted 20 million Victory Gardens and raised 9 -10 million tons of produce. If they could do it then, we can do it now! (And even if the zombies aren’t coming right away, it’s good to be prepared!)
One more thing….we think that just because there’s an apocalypse it doesn’t mean things are all gloom and doom. So we’re including all kinds of advice for ways to use what you find to make your life just as fulfilling as it was before the Zombies arrived.
Our Gardening Guide Characters
We asked Les to tell you a little about himself, but he’s a man of few words. He did fill out our questionnaire:
Pre-ZA Employment: Yes
Is the glass half empty or half full? At least we HAVE a glass and I know where to get water, so the current amount doesn’t matter.
What’s your favorite thing about the Zombie Apocalypse? I like making things work. I like coming up with the most efficient way to get things done, and I like being self-sufficient.
How would you describe your housemate, Kathy Sue? She has lots of ideas. And she’s not afraid to try new things. But, I don’t totally understand her.
Kathy Sue wouldn’t talk about who she is, but we couldn’t get her to stop talking about all her latest, exciting ideas. She didn’t like our questionnaire, so here’s what we got from her instead:
Name: Kathy Sue
Pre-ZA Employment: Well really, it has nothing to do with what I do now, so it’s not important.
Is the glass half empty or half full? The glass is at least half full, but wouldn’t it be better if we made it into Lemonade? Do you have any lemons? Oh – I can run to the store and get some lemon juice! I’ll be right back!
What’s your favorite thing about the Zombie Apocalypse? The shopping is great and I can wear anything I want! Did you know that it’s easy to garden in a skirt? I like frills, but practical shoes are important. It’s hard to kill zombies when I’m wearing heels. You should see my shoe closet!
How would you describe your housemate, Les? Les’s favorite letter is “E” for “Efficient” but he doesn’t know he has a favorite letter. He’s also very tidy, and helpful. And he sleeps on a cot. (At this point in the interview, Les asked her to come help with the garden and STOP TALKING!)
Kathy Sue came back to get her machete for the zombies, and told us a few more things:
“I think you should know that I think that life should be beautiful, and I like to put the “fun” in “functional.” Les and I fight about that sometimes. Les says there’s a reason there’s a box and I should stop thinking quite so far outside of it. But I’ll tell you, he wouldn’t have those strawberries he loves so much if it wasn’t for me.” (Then Les came and got her again.)
Kathy Voth and Leah Ashley Esser are the brains behind Zombie Victory Gardens. They believe that thinking outside the box, a sense of humor, and teamwork are the keys that make anything work. They currently spend much of their time working in their gardens, writing, photographing, and prepping all the things it takes to get a new concept off the desk and out into the world.
