The Horde opens drearily, at a funeral: not an exciting, zombies-clawing-out-of-graves-to-eat-the-mourners funeral, but a sincere grieving for a fallen police officer. However, the Horde quickly loses any claim to sincerity, as the fallen officer’s vigilante colleagues decide to exact revenge upon the responsible criminals. Queue the excessive violence and scumbag characters. Soon after a failed and bloody siege attempt on a derelict apartment building, our “protagonists” must join forces with their criminal enemies to survive a sudden-onset zombie apocalypse.

The directors, Dahan and Rocher, could have used the setting and unsympathetic characters of the Horde as a canvas to explore humanity’s flaws when faced with the collapse of society. Unfortunately, such insight is completely absent in this bloody and violent mess. Even when the story attempts to delve into and explore the most deplorable aspects of humanity, it results in awkward and difficult to watch scenes.
